Outcomes: Life After GA
I have now officially completed General Assembly's 10-week User Experience Design Immersive, but the journey with GA is not over. Now that we are moving into the job search, we still have a full schedule ahead with lectures and workshops to help us through life after GA.
In order to get career support from GA, we need to do our part in helping ourselves in this process. To qualify, we are required to:
- Submit 10-15 job applications per week
- Attend at least 2 networking events per month
- Check in with our career coach on a weekly basis
- Have a presence in our preferred market
- Build new projects and continue work on our portfolios
In addition, we must complete our GA and LinkedIn profiles by Tuesday (11/17) to prepare for the Meet & Hire that is coming up on December 9.
Project 5 Presentations
I will be including a link more details about our final client project in my next post (after I've written up a case study), but in summary, it was really great to work on a project with a real stakeholder and developer that valued the design work we did for their product. Throughout the 2.5 weeks that we worked with the CEO and developer of Honeit, we had some great conversations about business needs, user needs, and constraints and we were able to really understand how dynamic and challenging it can be to piece all of these together into a design proposal.
We presented our projects to our clients on Wednesday. It was such a different experience to present our ideas to an actual team that is looking to implement our designs. Honeit's founder, Nick Livingston, and developer, James Craft, asked us some important, relevant questions throughout our presentation, and we were excited to turn a presentation into a conversation.
Our client was happy with what we produced, and by the time we gave our final presentation, some of our ideas had already been implemented! My team is really looking forward to seeing how Honeit evolves as our designs become more incorporated into their product.
Eatsa
On Thursday, we had a fun assignment to get in small groups, go to lunch at a new robo-restaurant, Eatsa, and report back on our findings in the form of a journey map. Eatsa is such a cool place, and if you're ever in San Francisco, I highly recommend trying it out. Delicious, environmentally-friendly, vegetarian quinoa bowls are served to you out of a mysterious and somewhat magical wall. I would include photos, but I don't want to ruin the surprise for you, because you should go experience it yourself.
We returned to share our journey maps and design recommendations. We were all brutally honest with our criticism, and little did we know that Eatsa's designer was standing in the back of the room listening to all of our feedback! He appreciated the insights, and moved on to present his design process that went from his first sketch (18 months ago) through today (2 months after opening).
10-Week Reflection
GA was a truly valuable experience and I am so glad that I chose GA for my UX education for so many reasons.
Instructors
Our instructors, Susan Wolfe and Ted Everson, were amazing. They taught us as much as I could have hoped to learn in 10 weeks and were extremely engaging throughout every lecture. They both provided great insights and help throughout our projects and were always there to provide support. I'm sure they had so much more they could have shared with us, so I wish we could just keep going back for more!
Classmates
I met so many great people that I hope to keep in contact with for years to come. It was great to work with a group that had a wide range of talents within the UX field. We were able to learn from each other and
Real Experiences
We learned through real experiences with real codesigners, real projects, and real clients. Every time we had a lecture, we implemented the ideas we learned in a project.
Career Support
Throughout our time at GA, we were always preparing for our job search. Now that we're done, I feel like a still have a lot of work ahead of me, but I also feel confident in my plan that GA (especially Andrew Whelan) helped me curate.
Inspiration Moving Forward
We have a lot of tools to work with moving forward and I left feeling confident that I am going to find a job I love. I'm so excited to be entering a field that is filled with constant learning and innovation, as well as one that allows me to create a positive contribution to the world.
